LINDSAY MITCHELL: Luxon isn't talking to me

Speaking after his cabinet meeting yesterday, affirming his continuing leadership of the National Party, Prime Minister Chris Luxon said:

"Everyday Kiwis will not be losing sleep over political sideshows in Wellington – they’ll be thinking about their mortgage, their kids’ education and the safety and security of their community."

It suddenly hit me.

He's not talking to me.

A good portion of New Zealanders have either paid off their mortgages or are renting. A great deal more than have active mortgages.

Most voters don't have children at school or uni.

And most people feel safe and secure in their community.

It suddenly hit me that Luxon talks to this small middle ground of young aspirant families who angst over their children.

He doesn't talk to an older generation who hold grave fears for the constitutional future of their country. Who have no trust that the health system will be reliable as they encounter conditions that may be life-threatening.

He certainly isn't talking to beneficiaries who largely rent and have no prospect of saving enough to obtain a mortgage.

He isn't talking to students who face leaving NZ to 1/ get a job and 2/ get a job that pays well enough to make a dent in their loans.

I realise the above statement is just a grab from a presser. But having said that, I've felt this generic sense of irrelevancy before and couldn't quite put my finger on why. Like he talks to the upwardly mobile who go to sports games and cafes and work out in their vast garages.

And it's not just him. Hipkins is the same. They talk to this particular group. Is it their group? Their friends and colleagues?

Or is that the group that contains the swinging voters?

I don't know. But I do know NZ is much, much more.

With his leadership confirmed - and frankly, I'm pleased the status quo and some skerrick of stability survived - he needs to start sounding like he knows that too.

What an excellent point you make, Lindsay. Thanks.

It’s quite simple. If Luxon spoke to us all, he would be much more popular! The rest of us are the hardworking taxpayers that keep the country going. Yes us Luxon. Speak to us too!!!!!

Australia has been referred to as the “White trash of Asia” - they didn’t even dignify New Zealand with a moniker, kind of explains how irrelevant our country is with its white guilt and welfare paradise. How about we do a management swop with Singapore - we send 5 of our top civil servants in exchange for one of theirs, term three years. Send 200 of ours in exchange for 40 of theirs and see where our economy is afterwards -

Not so Lindsay - he's also speaking to the Indians too - the ones here and those yet to arrive. Apparently he speaks to them every weekend, so he claims.

Nats have shown most of them are cowards backing a globalist puppet he is doing exactly what they want he doesnt care if this government goes out he will have done his job.. As for Shane Jones he has done his party a disservice right ahead of the elections then tries to come back with they are against co-governance yet it is still there which none of these parties have altered.. NZ's Constitution is heavely weighted on governments side not the peoples H Clark saw to that. There really needs to be a clean up of all the government background illegal laws. Do we see a minor party coming through because everyone is sick of what we have or stayi…

Excellent ND, spot on abt. Nats & NZF and our illegal laws, or perhaps the illegal application of our laws. I have been going off NZF for sometime now - can't put my finger on it precisely but Jones & Peters are not what they purport to be. Is it even worth voting ? Not because there are no parties worth voting for (Outdoors & Freedom party, the renewed NZ Loyal, maybe ToP) but because the system is broken - in fact completely FUBAR. Then we need to add in the fact that the whole world is going to hell in a hand cart. We're on our own, do the best you can for you and your clan.
